FAIRMOUNT INNOVATION LAB RECEIVES $85,000 GRANT FROM MASSDEVELOPMENT TO EXPAND ITS CO-WORKING SPACE IN UPHAMS CORNER

Boston, Mass. (November XX, 2017) -

On October 26, 2017, government officials and philanthropic supporters, including Jay Ash, State Secretary of Housing and Economic Development, Lauren Liss, President and CEO of MassDevelopment, Julie Burros, the City of Boston’s Chief of Arts & Culture and San San Wong, Senior Arts Program Officer for the Barr Foundation, gathered at Fairmount Innovation Lab (“FIL”) to hear Secretary Jay Ash announce the most recent round of Collaborative Workspace Program grants, including an $85,000 grant for FIL to develop and equip 3,050-square-foot of collaborative work space at 594 Columbia Road.  This is the second time that FIL has received a grant from MassDevelopment.  In December 2016, FIL was awarded a $25,000 to grant to conduct a feasibility study.

“We are thrilled to be one of the recipients of the competitive grants to expand our co-working space in Uphams Corner in Dorchester and help creative and social entrepreneurs work, collaborate and learn from and alongside each other.  We also believe that this grant will help us expand our reach with early stage underrepresented creative and social entrepreneurs that participate in our 12 week accelerator program, FIL Launchpad,” said FIL Executive Director, Liora Beer.

$1,257,592 million grants were awarded to 20 organizations in eastern Massachusetts to strengthen community-based innovation and entrepreneurship in the Commonwealth’s cities and towns and will be managed by MassDevelopment.  Lauren Liss, MassDevelopment President and CEO, San San Wong, Senior Officer for the Arts at the Barr Foundation and Liora Beer, Executive Director of Artmorpheus and Director of the Fairmount Innovation Lab (FIL) also spoke at the celebratory event.

Since FIL’s inception two years ago, 57 creative and social entrepreneurs have completed the FIL Launchpad accelerator.  95 percent of those entrepreneurs were minority and 75% were women.

FIL also offers a variety of business and educational workshops, a design/prototype studio, as well as creative pop-ups and networking events open to the community.
More than 400 individuals have participated in workshops and events at FIL, including 94% minorities and 81% women.
