An ICIC Report Reveals How Incubators and Accelerators Can Increase Diversity

BOSTINNO- Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC), a nonprofit based in Dudley Square, Roxbury, recently released a report highlighting a lack of diversity among incubators and accelerators, calling for action.
For the report, “Creating Inclusive High-Tech Incubators and Accelerators: Strategies to Increase Participation Rates of Women and Minority Entrepreneurs”, ICIC partnered with JP Morgan Chase. They interviewed more than 75 industry experts to understand diversity dynamics within incubators and accelerators throughout the country, in addition to coming up with solutions to increase inclusiveness of women and minorities among these programs.

Fairmount Innovation Lab (FI-Lab) is an incubator and accelerator that was launched in 2015 in the Uphams Corner Dorchester neighborhood of Boston as part of a place-making initiative. FI-Lab draws on the cultural assets in the Fairmount Corridor to catalyze the launch and development of creative enterprises in the area. It offers a customized curriculum and workshop offerings, professional expertise and services, including assistance with access to capital and co-working. FI-Lab had deliberately adjusted its programming and curriculum in order to serve the entrepreneurs in the local community and has a diverse representation of entrepreneurs (approximately 89 percent are women-owned or led and 90 percent are minority-owned or led).

Since its launch last May, Uphams Corner’s Fairmount Innovation Lab has already ushered its first round of Dorchester-based entrepreneurs through months of legal workshops, financial trainings, and business mentoring. Now, just six months later, the Lab is looking for ways to improve its model and better serve the community’s creative sector while recruiting the next round of business innovators for its accelerator program.“The whole idea was to use art and culture as a way to engage the community and help them envision the change they wanted,” said Liora Beer, the founding executive director of the Fairmount Innovation Lab. “A lot was learned.” Read more

Fairmount Innovation Lab launches in Uphams Corner

BOSTON GLOBE - City and state officials and Dorchester residents celebrated the opening of a new space for entrepreneurs and creative workers Saturday. The Fairmount Innovation Lab, a co-working space and accelerator program for startups, kicked off with a meet-and-greet at its lab space near Uphams Corner. On Saturday, city officials will celebrate the launch of the Fairmount Innovation Lab, a new startup incubator and co-working space at 584 Columbia Road in Dorchester's Upham’s Corner. REUTERS - A coalition of universities, tech companies, and the City of Boston are planning a new hackathon next month that aims to spread entrepreneurship and innovation to more corners of the city. CityStart Boston will take place May 30 at MassChallenge in the Innovation District, with a final judging session happening several weeks later. DORCHESTER NEWS - A new resource will soon be available for enterprising individuals living near the Fairmount Corridor Commuter Rail Line. The Fairmount Innovation Lab, a business lab aimed at growing creative industries in the communities connected by the MBTA’s Fairmount Indigo Line, is accepting applications for its LaunchPad initiative. The LaunchPad is a competitive program that will provide ten start-ups with a four-month immersion in business and financial training, access to a collaborative workspace and a community of entrepreneurs, multiple networking opportunities and support from expert mentors.
